What Jesus’ Blood Does

by bowens ~ September 1st, 2008

For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Hebrews 9:13-14

How powerful the blood of Christ, the death of Christ! If you simply follow the simple sentence here you see this: How much more will the blood of Christ purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. This brings a few things to my mind:

  • Christ’ blood is far superior to that of the sacrifices of the Old Testament certainly signifying that Christ has replaced the sacrifices.
  • Christ’ blood is powerful enough that it purifies our conscience from dead works. Which is another way of saying that those things we were attempting to do in order to secure our rightness with God, are wiped away. But it does not stop there. We are made by the blood of Christ to be serving the living God.

How precious is the blood of Christ, that so thoroughly cleanses our minds, that so captures our hearts, that so eradicates our sin problem, that it sets us free to serve the living God. Now being freed from sin’s tyranny, His blood unshackled us from dead works. Works that seem good on the outside, but on the inside are death.

Have you been set free? Have you thought on, gloried in, and praised Christ for setting you free?

Lavish Devotion in the face of Opposition

Our High Priest

by bowens ~ August 25th, 2008

I have been reading through Hebrews for a while now, and last week I came across these verses:

Hebrews 7:23-25 - The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

So as I read these words and meditated I wrote these words in a poem:

Oh Christ my King, Majestic Lord
To you I sing, a song of love
For your sinless, spotless boast
Secured my peace to the utter most.

O Christ my Lord, My great High Priest
To you I soar with wings of hope
For your ever living self
Keeps my soul from Satan’s Hell

Glory to My great high priest,
Exalted Savior at your feet
I lay my all to delight in you,
Take my name and intercede.
